We mourn the loss of war correspondent Vedat Yenerer
Vienna, 28 July 2026 — The International Austrian-Turkish Press Association in Vienna is deeply saddened by the passing of Vedat Yenerer, one of the most respected journalists and authors in the Turkish press. He died at the age of 61.
Throughout a long and distinguished career, Yenerer reported from some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones, among them Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya and Afghanistan. Working under extreme conditions, he brought the human reality of war, violence and displacement to the public with courage, professional discipline and an unwavering commitment to the truth.
He worked for leading Turkish media organisations, including Milliyet, Sabah, Akşam, TRT, NTV and TGRT, and was among the small number of Turkish journalists who personally witnessed and documented numerous wars and regional conflicts from the field.
Yenerer also recorded his experiences, observations and investigations in several books, among them Ateş Çemberi, Terörün Karanlık Yüzü, Savaşın Tanıkları, Karanlık Oyunlar and İstihbaratın Gizli Kodları. His reporting and published works will remain an enduring testimony to the conflicts of his era and to the responsibilities borne by journalists who work on the front lines.
In a statement, the International Austrian-Turkish Press Association in Vienna said:
„We have lost war correspondent Vedat Yenerer. Through his courageous reporting, his devotion to the truth and his work in countless conflict zones, he left a lasting mark on Turkish journalism. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, his relatives, his colleagues and all who knew him. May he rest in peace.“
His colleague, the veteran journalist Ahmet Özay, who lives in Cologne, announced Yenerer’s death with the following words:
„I have lost my dear friend and colleague Vedat Yenerer at the age of 61. A war correspondent and the author of numerous books, Yenerer will live on through his ideals and his works. May he rest in peace.“
Vedat Yenerer’s courage, professional integrity and dedication to his craft will not be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire the journalists who believe that the truth must be told, even under the most difficult and dangerous of circumstances.
